Want porcelain skin? Well, it may be natural for Snow White, and lucky real life beauties including Cate Blanchett, Dita Von Teese and Keira Knightley, but for most of us having pale and blemish free skin is all but a dream. There’s a new product, however, which has recently come across my desk, and which defies this belief. Luxury brand Alex Cosmetics has recently launched Porcelain Glow Balm, an all-in-one corrector, concealer and primer. Okay so it’s not exactly inexpensive, coming in at $153 for a tube, but if it works and you can use it sparingly, isn’t that a good thing? Alex Cosmetics and Dr. Spiller skincare expert, Sue Dann, says that porcelain skin isn’t the stuff of fairytales anymore; I’ve met Sue more than once and she knows her stuff. This new product helps those of us with less than perfect complexions to achieve beautiful, pale skin in just a few dabs. The balm works in a couple of ways, instantly covering up dark spots, while also minimising the appearance of pores. What you are promised is a porcelain glow combined with a perfectly even skin tone. But in line with all Alex Cosmetics, this balm has other skin benefits, as the formula includes a vitamin C derivative, and it protects against UVA and UVB rays, which in the longterm will brighten your skin tone.

The pending question is, however, does it work? Well, for a start, Sue Dann was right about using only a dab as needed; the first time I tried it, I slathered it on and used way too much, ending up with a somewhat spooky appearance (ideal for Halloween last night, though). The second time I got it right. You can use it all over your face, albeit sparingly, or as I did, just where needed, such as covering any pigment or age spots, under the eye area to cover dark circles, or anywhere where the sun has left visible damage such as the forehead or cheeks. If you use it sparingly it blends quite easily, and once its on the skin it softens nicely, locking in moisture and not feeling tight over time. And although I suspected it might be difficult to wash off, it wasn’t. I’ve since used it as a primer under full makeup, and a concealer, and I have to say in spite of my initial spooky look I absolutely love it. Does it help travellers, I hear you ask? Well, it will cover up a multitude of travel sins…..staying up late, not getting enough sleep, and long haul flying complexion. Just try it! Alex Porcelain Glow Balm is available at leading skincare salons and spas, and from www.herbalpeel.com.au (or call 1300 301 007 for info and stockists).
