Overview:

For many couples a romantic beach holiday involves heading to a full-service resort, but sometimes it’s nice to truly leave everything behind and do your own thing. If you go self-catering at a luxury apartment, you have the option of cooking and kicking back at home, as well as going out to top class restaurants. The Gold Coast has many such properties to choose from, but Kirra Surf is one to check out for a variety of reasons. It’s tucked away at the quieter, southern end of the Gold Coast, just five minutes from Gold Coast Airport (not that you will ever hear, or see, a plane). And it’s also just a few minutes walk from the restaurants and shops of Coolangatta, with a gorgeous beach and famous surf break right across the street. And as a bonus, a 20-30 minute drive will take you to the northern beaches of the Gold Coast, and its famous hinterland. Kirra Surf is also a property which has it all accommodation wise, and for facilities too.

The Accommodation:

The range of accommodation is impressive ranging from one-bedroom apartments ideal for couples through to a glamorous sub-penthouse and penthouse accommodating groups of friends or families, one of which has a private, outdoor spa pool.

Where We Stayed:

Although we were travelling as a couple, our home for six nights thanks to an upgrade was a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment the top floor of the main building which came with the bonus of a private rooftop area and a second bathroom. The decor throughout the apartment was streamlined, with white washed walls, white tiled floors with flecks of grey in the entryway, kitchen area and bathrooms, and a chocolate brown berber style carpet elsewhere. The artwork throughout has a beach theme, the second bedroom with twin beds and a small balcony with a hinterland view. The kitchen had nice Miele appliances including a microwave and dishwasher with plenty of storage space with luxuries including a coffee plunger. The kitchen lead through to an open plan living and dining area, with a glass table and four chairs, a long leather sofa with a day bed, a large coffee table, and a large flat screen TV with a CD and DVD player and complimentary Austar. The upstairs terrace, which was huge, and accessed by a staircase from the living area, was equipped with four sun beds but had no table and chairs, and no cover, and no private BBQ. As a result, it was too hot to sit out during the day without an awning, and you couldn’t comfortably sit out at night with a drink - perhaps as a result of the strict no party rules. The master bedroom was off the living area with a comfy double bed, a wall-mounted flat screen TV, and its own ensuite bathroom as well as a walk-in closet. The bathroom, which was all white, was generous with a deep spa bath tub and windows you could open to enjoy the view through the bedroom. Off the master bedroom and the living area was a lovely deep balcony which had casual seating for four, and a long table and chairs for up to six. Overall the apartment was well equipped with a large broom closet with an iron and iron board, and a rack to stack washing, and a utility closet with a washer and dryer and sink.

What Else Is There:

Kirra Surf is an apartment complex with a good lineup of facilities on site, which include a communal barbecue area, a fully equipped gym with a sauna, an outdoor heated pool, and secure underground parking. And if you fancy renting a surf board or going on a local tour, the friendly staff can help. The property also now has complimentary Wi-Fi access to complement the free Austar.

The Verdict:

If you’re looking to self-cater for a beach holiday, cook at home from time to time, yet be close to world class restaurants and other facilities, Kirra Surf is well worth considering.
