Established in 1869, the legendary Mohonk Mountain house has played host to more than a century’s worth of distinguished guests from naturalists, theologians and business leaders, to award winning actors, artists, authors and musicians. Here’s why.
- Location: The Hudson Valley on the Shawangunk Ridge in Ulster County, New York, 145 kilometres north of New York City.
- Accommodations: The historic mountain resort has 265 gracious guest rooms and suites, five scenic cottages and a lodge providing accommodation for a total of 600 guests.
- Dining Options: Your stay includes three meals per day, plus afternoon tea and most non-alcoholic beverages. The Dining Room serves a buffet for breakfast and lunch, and a traditional three-course dinner at night featuring dishes sourced from locally produced ingredients.
- What else is there: The lineup of recreational activities includes horse-riding, tennis, archery, tomahawk throwing, fishing, ice skating, and rock climbing, and there are 137 kilometres of trails for seasonal hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing. The fitness centre has yoga and exercise classes, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and there’s a nine-hole Scottish inspired golf course. There is also a lake for swimming, boating and water sports. Wrapping things up is a 16-room spa offering signature wellness treatments.
- What’s nearby: 10 kilometres from Mohonk is the vibrant village of New Paltz, which is home to a lively music scene, farm-to table eateries, charming boutiques and cafes. Situated just beyond the southern border of the Catskill Mountains, the area is surrounded by 16,000 hectares of forest where wildlife and tourism adventures abound.
- Why go: A visit to this historic Victorian resort will renew your soul. Every nook of this resort is special, from the spectacular scenery to the recreational activities, and embracing a sense of history and wonder. It’s like being held in a bubble where nature, wellness and fabulous food are all consuming.
The Space
Prominently positioned above the town of New Paltz, Mohonk Mountain House is a testament to the preservation of the wonders of the natural world. The resort has breathtaking grounds stretching over a quarter of a kilometre, featuring exquisite gardens, sweeping lawns and extraordinary scenic beauty. The elegant suites, rooms, and cottages blend Victorian luxury with modern amenities. Warm wood touches and soothing earth tones reflect the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley region. Most suites feature private balconies, in-room fireplaces, and original antique-style furnishings while guest rooms also feature furnishings inspired by a rich history at the turn of the 20th century.
Where We Stayed
The minute you are guided through the heavy wooden doors and expansive wood panelled foyer at Mohonk, you feel as though you have stepped back in time. A wide timber staircase and wood panelled elevator lead through carpeted spacious hallways. We stayed in a Standard Room, yet it offered all the modern amenities and luxury to ensure total comfort. There’s high speed wireless internet, an in-room refrigerator, an alarm clock and 24-hour concierge. The space featured a cosy and supportive king bed adorned with the finest linen, and our spacious balcony overlooked the property with two rocking chairs in which to relax. The room didn’t have a TV but featured a glowing open fireplace, and the large marble bathroom was stocked with cozy robes and gorgeous rosemary mint bath products, which are a signature creation for the resort.
