Overview:

Winter cold, wind, too much sun, air-conditioning, heating, and long haul flights are just a few travel culprits which can leave your skin looking less than pretty at any time of year. So what’s a girl to do if she wants to get her skin back to its clear and perky self? Sometimes you need to take action a little more drastically than trying out a new skin care product, and that’s where Skinstitut’s AHA Enzyme Peel can work wonders. A facial treatment that uses enzymes to gently micro-exfoliate and refresh the skin, it also helps to prep your skin ready for that special holiday you’ve been waiting to take all year. Skinstitut is a brand I discovered some years ago when it first launched into the Australian market and I liked it immediately. For one, the products are no fuss, they contain scientifically proven ingredients without any gimmicks, and they still cost just $45 each. They also come in no nonsense packaging, ideal for her and for him - great for sharing on the road.

The Decor:

The Gold Coast has many places where you can indulge in beauty or spa treatments, but when it comes to Skinstitut facials and products, look no further than Laser Clinics Australia. A one-stop-shop for all things beauty year-round, on its menu are all the essentials from hair removal and face-plumping injections, to facials and microdermabrasion. The clinic I visited for my Skinstitut AHA Enzyme Peel was at Pacific Fair in Broadbeach on Queensland’s Gold Coast, an iconic shopping mall which enjoyed a $267 million overhaul in 2016. With the elegant appearance of a medispa, it has a lovely reception area and waiting area, comfortable and spacious treatment rooms, and well trained staff. And if you head to Laser Clinics Australia, you can also have a full Skinstitut skin-care consultation, not to mention buy Skinstitut products, which will have your skin back to its best in a jiffy.

The Treatment:

Some people are fearful of the idea of a facial peel, believing that they can be harsh and involve post-treatment redness and downtime. This AHA Enzyme Peel is not only essentially an express service, which means it can be carried easily out in your lunch hour, but it’s also gentle on the skin with little to no redness afterwards, so you can get back to what you were doing quickly and easily. The treatment begins with a cleansing to remove makeup and any impurities, while protecting the skin’s delicate pH balance. Next comes a second, deeper cleanse, using gauze and a glycolic acid cleanser, and light circular motions on the skin. This gently begins the exfoliating process, and you can feel it working by way of slight tingling which is completely normal. The skin is then dried ahead of the degreasing stage, which thoroughly removes excess oils, and leaves your skin feeling clean and fresh, easing congestion and brightening the skin. The final stage is the micro peel, which is applied with a brush to the entire face, and then massaged into the skin for about five minutes to intensify the action of the enzymes, and increase lymphatic drainage. At the end of all this, your skin not only looks fresh but feels amazing. The following day I had the tiniest bit of flaking around my nose and chin, which is perfectly normal, but otherwise my skin looked and felt great. Part of the aftercare is also avoiding the sun, and any harsh or active skin care products, such as my vitamin C powder and vitamin A cream, for about five days. I was also given a full skin consultation as part of my treatment, as well as a recommended skin care “prescription” with a list of which products to use and why. These products will appear in my Beauty In Travel blog in due course so check back!

The Verdict:

This is not a peel to be fearful of at all. In fact, all it takes is around 20 minutes for your complexion to go from dull to dazzling with no down time. It’s suitable for all skin types, even anyone suffering from sensitivity or acne, and it will leave your skin soothed, hydrated and your complexion renewed. It’s the ideal treatment pre-holiday. Aim for 1-4 treatments a few weeks apart starting a few months before you travel, or use as a pick-me-up for your skin anytime.
